چکیده

We show that in the late-infall model of our galactic halo by P. Sikivie the expected phase of the annual modulation of a WIMP halo signal in direct detection experiments is opposite to the one usually expected. If a non-virialized halo component due to the infall of (collisionless) dark matter particles cannot be rejected, an annual modulation in a dark matter signal should be looked for by experimenters without fixing the phase apriori. Moreover, WIMP streams coming to Earth from directions above and below the galactic plane should be expected, with a characteristic pattern of arrival directions.

The Phase of the Annual Modulation as a Tool for Determining the WIMP Mass

The count rate of Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter candidates in direct detection experiments experiences an annual modulation due to the Earth’s motion around the Sun. In standard isothermal halo models, the signal peaks near June 2nd at high recoil energies, but experiences a phase reversal at low recoil energies, peaking in December. We show that this phase reversal may...

The late infall of cold dark matter onto an isolated galaxy produces flows with definite local velocity vectors throughout the galactic halo. It also produces caustic rings, which are places in the halo where the dark matter density is very large. The self-similar model of halo formation predicts that the caustic ring radii an follow the approximate law an ≃ 1/n. I interpret bumps in the rotati...

DAMA detection claim is still compatible with all other DM searches 1

We show that the annual modulation signal observed by DAMA can be reconciled with all other negative results from dark matter searches with a conventional halo model for particle masses around 5 to 9 GeV. We also show which particular dark matter stream could produce the DAMA signal. Given the country which hosts this conference, TAUP2005, I was tempted to change the title into a well known spa...

Velocity Impact on Direct Dark Matter Searches

We examine the effect of some uncertainties in the input astrophysical parameters on direct detection searches for WIMPs in the Galactic halo. We concentrate on the possible WIMP annual modulation signal recently reported by the DAMA Collaboration. We find that allowing for a reasonable uncertainty in a WIMP Maxwellian velocity distribution leads to significantly relaxed constraints on the WIMP...
